- W2045007802 abstract "There is increasing evidence that the mucosa-associated flora may be important in the pathogenesis of the inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). The actual study has been addressed to the biological and molecular characterization of E. coli strains isolated from IBD patients. Almost all E. coli strains isolated adhere to intestinal epithelial cell lines, and this results was increased in monolayer treated with neuraminidase. Only few of this mucosa-associated E. coli are able to invade epithelial cells. A significantly high number of E. coli are positive for at least one adhesin gene and negative for the standard markers of E. coli virulent strains. Preliminary results obtained by plasmidic and genomic profiles show that E. coli strains from different patients are genetically distinct. Adherence of “non-pathogenic” E. coli to the intestinal epithelium may be a primary event in the pathogenesis of IBD. It also is plausible that the large population of adherent E. coli may harbour other undescribed pathogenic factors. These results indicate that the term “commensal bacteria” needs to be redefined." @default.
