- W2045105908 abstract "The purpose of this experiment was to examine the effect of the respiratory compensation threshold (RCT) upon subsequent maximal arm ergometry. All subjects (males = 28, females = 21; age = 24.7 ± 3.9 yrs) performed a one-min bout of maximal arm ergometry against a resistance of 0.0375 kp× kg body mass. This was done on two occasions, once when fully rested to establish baseline data and once immediately following the completion of a timed run (≈3 min). The timed run consisted of a 0.35 mile jog, performed at about 6.9 mph. Subjects were instructed and verbally encouraged throughout the arm crank test to perform as many revolutions as possible, which were then recorded and converted to total work (W[Illegible Text]). Maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) was determined on a separate day during an incremental treadmill test taken to volitional fatigue. Respiratory gas was collected during the submaximal run for the purpose of determining % VO2 and analyzed using conventional open circuit spirometry. RCT was determined by plotting minute ventilation (VE) against VO2 and drawing a line of best fit through the second alinear rise in VE with respect to VO2. The VO2 that corresponded to that point was then determined for each subject. The submaximal run required 86.3 ± 10.2% VO2max (VO2max = 48.1 ± ml · kg-1· min-1). Post test W[Illegible Text] decreased 20.6 % from baseline (1223.1 ± 466.0 kgm to 970.9 ± 384.1 kgm; p< 0.05). RCT occurred at 86.9 ± 6.1 % VO2max. Subjects who performed the timed run above RCT (n = 22; 26.1 ± 8.4 %) had a significantly (p<0.001) greater decrement in post-run arm ergometry performance than those who performed below RCT (n = 27; 6.5 ± 8.7%). The VO2 at which RCT occurred was highly correlated (r = 0.904, p<0.001) with VO2max and inversely correlated with % VO2max during the timed run (r = -0.738, p<0.001). These results indicate that a threshold level of aerobic fitness is required in such tasks where supramaximal effort often follows prior exertion." @default.
