- W2045134829 abstract "The great variety of experimental systems in which differentiated cells modulate their phenotype, patterns of biosyntheses, or both suggests that “stability” may not characterize the process called “differentiation.” Rather, the “acquisition of stability” appears to be a more accurate definition of this process. A given cell in a defined microenvironment can be envisioned exhibiting a major biosynthetic pattern, with alternative syntheses held in abeyance for the lack of an appropriate stimulus (i.e., a permissive microenvironment). The work discussed in this chapter utilizes the well-characterized bone-inductive system to study the mechanism whereby skeletal muscle apparently transforms into cartilage. The chapter also provides a brief review of the state of differentiation of the source skeletal muscle. Whether or not embryonic limb mesenchymal cells are predetermined remains a viable question in developmental biology because Investigators have yet to agree on an adequate definition of differentiation. The results of investigations in separate laboratories may vary depending upon the conditions under which the experiment is conducted." @default.
