- W2045200934 abstract "To investigate the relationships between the positive reinforcing and satiating effects of ingested food, we compared the positive reinforcing effect that determines the development of preference for flavor and spout location of food that was really fed and elicited satiety with food that was sham fed and did not elicit satiety. When 17 hr food deprived rats sham fed the same volume of liquid food that they ingested in a real meal or when they sham fed for an interval that was equivalent to the duration of a real meal, they did not develop a preference for the flavor and location of food associated with real feeding or sham feeding. Since sham feeding did not elicit the behavioral sequence of satiety, the occurrence of satiety at the end of a meal did not have a measurable positive reinforcing effect under these conditions. When sham feeding was sustained for 60 min, however, rats developed a preference for the flavor and location of the food that was really fed. Under this condition, therefore, the occurrence of satiety was associated with the development of preference. It is not clear whether this association means that satiety had a positive reinforcing effect under this condition or whether satiety prevented the occurrence of a negative reinforcing effect of sham feeding when sham feeding was sustained for 60 min. Since rats sham fed approximately 6 times as much food in 60 min as they ingested in a real meal, this result also demonstrates that the positive reinforcing effect of food that determines the development of preference is not identical with the positive reinforcing effect of food that sustains sham feeding." @default.
