- W2045248513 abstract "Anthropological approaches to ritual were developed based on isolated, small-scale societies. The study of ritual practice in modern and modernizing societies poses new questions in terms of the functions and meanings of rituals, and in terms of who performs rituals. In modern societies, high geographic and social mobility mean that diverse populations live near or among each other, allowing individuals to be aware of more than one ritual option. Because group sanctions that can force individuals to perform particular rituals rarely exist in modern societies, issues of choice become particularly interesting. Moreover, traditional anthropological analyses of birth, maturation, and death rituals tended to presuppose the extended family, the lineage, or the village as a relevant reference group. In modern societies, the nuclear family has become the main-or even the sole-arena in which life-cycle events have meaning. A fruitful approach to the study of rituals in the modern world must take cognizance of the fact that the nuclear family provides the social, financial, and emotional context within which individuals perform life-cycle rituals. If, as anthropologists claim, ritual is social drama," @default.
