- W2045336593 abstract "<h2>Abstract</h2> The potential role of myoglobin as a protective agent against myocardial hypoxia was tested by exploiting naturally occurring differences in heart myoglobin content between two species of fish. The mechanical performance of perfused isolated ocean pout (myoglobin content < 3 nmol/g) and sea raven hearts (myoglobin content 68 nmol/g) was assessed under normoxic and hypoxic challenges. The myoglobin-rich hearts performed significantly better than the myoglobin-poor hearts under conditions of hypoxia and glycolytic blockage with iodoacetate. Furthermore, the performance of sea raven hearts was impaired during hypoxia by altering the content of functional myoglobin to 23 nmol/g with hydroxylamine. No effect upon performance was observed during normoxic perfusion of sea raven hearts or under any condition with the myoglobin-poor ocean pout hearts when hydroxylamine was added to the perfusate. The data indicate that myoglobin plays a role in the maintenance of contractility under hypoxic conditions presumably by facilitating oxygen diffusion." @default.
