- W2045344583 abstract "Background: Platelet function disorders (PFDs) are a heterogeneous group of hemostatic defects that have received increasing attention as an etiology of adolescent menorrhagia. Diagnosing these disorders is complex and the laboratory testing is not well standardized. The evaluation often begins by examining the blood smear as well as assessing platelet counts and size. Standard platelet function screening tests are used. Platelet aggregation studies test for platelet function and are commonly used for confirming screening findings. In addition, electron microscopy (EM) of platelets is useful in diagnosing storage pool defects (dense or δ-granule deficiencies). Family histories of bleeding tendencies can also assist in identifying PFDs. The diagnostic evaluation of PFDs in adolescents with menorrhagia has not been assessed. We discuss our experience with different testing modalities in the adolescent subgroup with PFDs and menorrhagia." @default.
