- W2045346032 abstract "It has been suggested that individuals in diet plus exercise programs compensate for energy expended in exercise by reducing physical activity at other times in the day (Wing, 1999). PURPOSE: To determine if previously sedentary college aged males and females who expend approximately 9300 ± 1601 kJ per week in exercise, without diet restriction, compensate by reducing habitual physical activity. METHODS: Males (n = 31) and females (n = 43) were randomly assigned to either exercise (EX) (16 M, age = 22 ± 4 yrs, BMI = 29.7 ± 2.9 kg*m.2: 25 F, age = 24 ± 5 yrs, BMI = 28.8 ± 3.2 kg*m.2) or control (CON) (15 M, age = 24 ± 4 yrs, BMI = 29.0 ± 3.0 kg*m.2: 18 F, age = 21 ± 4 yrs, BMI = 29.2 ± 2.3 kg*m.2). Exercise progressed across 24 weeks from 30 min, 3 days/wk to 45 min, 5 days/week, at 70–80% HRR, and then was maintained until 16 months, under direct supervision. CON completed no structured exercise for 16 months. Habitual physical activity (HPA) was determined as minutes of moderate (MOD), hard (HD) and very hard (VHRD) physical activity completed outside of the scheduled exercise session each day and was estimated using the Seven Day Physical Activity Recall (PAQ) developed by Sallis et al., (1985). PAQ was administered at baseline (B), 9 months (9), and 16 months (16). RESULTS: NS between CON and EX for M or F during any testing period. NS across time.Table: No Caption AvailableCONCLUSION: There were no significant differences for M or F between the CON and EX groups for HPA suggesting that the exercise subjects did not compensate for their exercise by decreasing or increasing HPA. Supported by NIHDK 49181 and M01 RR00051" @default.
