- W2045361255 abstract "Abstract Chickens rendered adipsic by hypothalamic lesions were used after adipsia had persisted for 16–20 months. The simple procedure of placing food and water pans side by side induced two out of three adipsic chickens to drink water. This was a learned response, and it took one to two weeks before the chickens voluntarily drank sufficient quantities of water to meet their needs. These chickens did not employ the motor reflexes used by normal chickens in drinking, but instead those normally used in eating i.e. the chickens “ate” water. Although adequate amounts of water were consumed, thirst was not restored, as shown by two tests: (1) dehydration by deprivation of water for two days; and, (2) an intravenous load of hypertonic NaCl. The intravenous salt load in the adipsic chickens provoked dramatic responses: one died of hyperthermia, and the other; (a) became hypothermic and refused food and water for four days after body temperature was restored to normal; and, (b) reverted to its adipsic condition and ceased to consume water voluntarily." @default.
