- W2045453746 abstract "Viewed by light microscopy, the junction of mature non-calcified articular cartilage and calcified cartilage is characterized by a narrow undulating dense hematoxyphyllic line of which little is known with regard to its structure or function (Fig. 1). In 1953, Fawns and Landells2 observed that “The form of the line suggests the name ‘tide-mark’ which is brief and convenient: it marks the limit of calcification but it is not actual calcium, since it is conspicuous in decalcified sections.” Green, Martin, Eanes, and Sokoloff3 reported in 1970 that the tidemark did not react with Bodian's copper-protargol method, a procedure that stained cement lines, osteocyte lacunae, and canaliculi. The tidemark was not composed of reticulin nor could a histochcmically distinct mucopolysaccharide or a stainable neutral or phospholipid be detected in it. We have examined the tidemark urea in normal human articular cartilage by scanning electron microscopy6, 8 and have determined its ultrastructural characteristics. Our morphological observations suggest a biomechanical role for the tidemark." @default.
