- W2045560019 abstract "Abstract It has been shown previously that the amplitude of either a purely horizontal (H) or purely vertical (V) saccade increases monotonically with its duration. An oblique saccade can be represented by the vector sum of two orthogonal components in, respectively, the H and V directions. In all but oblique saccades inclined at 45°, the amplitudes of the H and V components will be unequal. The question arises as to whether the durations of these orthogonal components are correspondingly unequal, resulting in a curved trajectory: or whether the durations are equalized—by an increase in the duration (prolongation) of the shorter component—to provide a rectilinear (oblique) eye movement trajectory. In the present work, comparisons were made between the durations of the H and V components of oblique saccades, made by alert chronic cats in either the light or dark. The durations of these orthogonal components were also compared to the durations of pure H or V movements of equivalent amplitudes. For tests in the light, it was found that there was a significant prolongation of the short component of nearly H or nearly V oblique saccades. Prolongation was nevertheless incomplete. On the average, the short component in the light was prolonged such that its duration was 90° that of the main component. In the dark, significant prolongation of the short component also occurred, but less so than in the light: Many short components were not prolonged in the dark and had durations equal to those of pure H or V movements of the same amplitude." @default.
