- W2045698241 abstract "Patients with multiple drug allergies pose a difficult challenge because of the complex and varied pathomechanisms of drug hypersensitivity reactions. These patients are frequently treated with alternative agents that may be more expensive, less efficacious, and more toxic. A comprehensive clinical history and appropriate phenotyping are essential for establishing the correct diagnosis and provide the framework necessary to accurately risk stratify the allergic patient and help guide choice of diagnostic tests. Currently, skin testing followed by an oral challenge is considered the gold standard for diagnosing an immediate drug allergy. With advances in technology and better understanding of immunologic processes, in vitro testing will likely play a more important role in the future, providing clinicians with a safe and efficient way to screen, evaluate, and diagnose patients with drug allergies. Validating simple and reliable in vitro testing that poses no risk to the patient has the potential to have far-reaching economic and health effects. Unfortunately, most in vitro testing to date lacks sensitivity and therefore should not be performed in isolation. More research is required to appropriately validate in vitro and in vivo drug testing to develop a more accurate diagnostic strategy." @default.
