- W2045705995 abstract "This article explores the possibility that Tirso de Molina drew on the story of Lope de Aguirre when writing El condenado por desconfiado. Aguirre led a particularly violent rebellion against the Spanish Crown between 1560 and 1561, and there are four personal accounts of these events written by men who had been with him. After the defeat of the rebellion the survivors were sent to Santo Domingo to be tried. Tirso de Molina spent two years there, between 1616 and 1618, and it will besuggested that he could have been aware of the events — Aguirre remained a contentious figure — and could have had the opportunity to examine the original chronicles. It will further be suggested that he drew directly on these chronicles and on the character of Aguirre they portrayed, to create his two principal characters, Enrico and Paulo." @default.
