- W2045707361 abstract "1078 At rest, most ventilation occurs through the nose. During mild to moderate exercise the nasal valve and nares expand to accommodate an increase in nasal airflow. At high levels of ventilation a switch point occurs where turbulent nasal airflow stimulates a change from nasal to oronasal or oral ventilation. The effects of placement of a BRNS on nasal airway resistance (Rna), nasal minute ventilation (Vn), and the minute ventilation (VE) or power output (PO) where the switch point occurs, are unknown. Thirteen subjects (7M, 6F) performed two progressive cycle ergometer tests while wearing a BRNS 1) as per the manufacturers instructions, over the alae nasi (experimental) or 2) over the nasal bone (control). Subjects breathed through separate oral and nasal masks with two-way valves and pneumotachometers to measure flow (V). Nasal resistance (Rna = ΔP/V, where ΔP = atmospheric pressure - nasopharyngeal pressure, was measured with catheters in the nasal mask and at the back of the oral cavity attached to a pressure transducer), Vn & oral minute ventilation were measured at each PO. Rna and Vn were not different between conditions at rest or during low POs, but Rna was lower and Vn higher with the experimental condition during exercise above the switch point(105-130W), compared to control. The VE or PO at the switch point was not different between the conditions. BRNS would appear to offer no advantage to exercise at higher intensities, but may permit greater nasal conditioning of inspired air during exercise in patients with exercise-induced asthma." @default.
