- W2045756879 abstract "Evoked responses to photic, autitory and somatic stimuli were recorded from the cerebral cortex of squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) rendered unconscious by partial or complete transection of the brain stem. Stimulation of each sensory modality elicited responses in the classical primary sensory area of the modality stimulated, and in other areas outside primary cortex. Photic stimuli elicited consistent responses in parietal cortex as well as striate and prestriate areas. Less frequently, photically evoked responses were detected in motor and prefrontal areas. Nonprimary click-evoked responses were prominent in motor cortex, and were seen less consistently in parietal and prefrontal areas. Bilateral nonprimary responses to somatic stimulation appeared in motor and prefrontal areas and less frequently in parietal nonprimary cortex. Parts of parietal, motor and prefrontal areas were responsive to stimulation of all three modalities, and are thus polysensory. Demonstration of sensory input to association and motor areas, considered “silent” when examined under barbiturate anesthesia, provides a means of studying their afferent organization electrophysiologically." @default.
