- W2045854850 abstract "Abstract A comparison of geologic and hydrographic data shows that major physiographic features of the northernmost Natal Valley (S.W. Indian Ocean) can be related to semipermanent circulation patterns in the Agulhas Current—part of the Western Boundary Current system of the Indian Ocean. Thick Lower Miocene to Recent sequences of sediment have accumulated in the northwestern part of the basin in response to up-welling and regions of maximum current shear between the main southerly flowing currents and in-shore counter-currents. Farther south and east, in areas under the influence of more powerful currents, eroded Tertiary and Cretaceous strata crop out on the sea-floor or are capped only by thin lenses of re-worked Neogene sediment. Abundant examples of current-moulded sedimentary features prove the competency of the currents in this latter region. The asymmetry of the resulting sediment-dispersal patterns has profoundly influenced the development of the continental margin, and is responsible for the following physiographic features: (a) restriction of the thick (up to 1.0 sec) Neogene sediment build-up of the 300 km long Limpopo Cone to the northwestern part of the basin; (b) accumulation of a glauconite-rich sedimentary mound (over 100 km long and up to 0.45 sec thick) under the influence of a nutrient-rich up-welling cell; (c) the sediment-free nature of parts of the outer edge of the narrow continental shelf and the upper continental slope; (d) the exposure of Cretaceous and Tertiary strata over large areas of current-scoured sea-floor in the southeastern part of the region; (e) the exposure of the volcanic sea-mounts of the Almirante Leite Bank, which are often flanked by asymmetrical sediment mounds, channels or sour-moats." @default.
