- W2045887923 abstract "In considering the ignition hazard of spark discharges from textile surfaces the prevailing view has been that, because of the insulating nature of the materials, such sparks are likely to be small. Nevertheless, incendiary spark discharges from the surfaces of certain polymeric materials have been reported in the literature. The present work concerns the determination of the charge released in single spark discharges from selected textile fabrics and the incendiary behaviour of such sparks in the presence of stoichiometric mixtures of natural gas and air and hydrogen and air. The results have been shown that under certain conditions sparks from a polyester and a cotton fabric are large enough to ignite each of these gas mixtures. Ignition tests with negatively charged fabrics have shown that sparks with charges in the region of 0.1 μC can ignite the natural gas-air mixture. The corresponding charge for the ignition of the hydrogen-air mixture is in the region of 0.02 μC. Spark discharges from negatively charged surfaces are considerably shorter in duration and larger in magnitude than are sparks from positively charged surfaces due, it is thought, to the differences in the masses and mobilities of the positive ions and electrons produced during ionisation." @default.
