- W2045950512 abstract "Cell therapy and regenerative medicine have emerged over recent years and are proving to be exciting areas of biochemical research. These proceedings summarize the Seventh Beaune Seminar in Transplantation Research that was once again devoted to transplantation tolerance induction. Speakers at this seminar focused their presentations on the potential clinical applications of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) in tolerance induction for both organ and hematopoietic transplantations. MSC are the progenitors of multiple mesenchymal lineages (bone, cartilage, muscle, fat tissue, and marrow stroma). Adult bone marrow and fat tissue are both rich sources of human MSC. Although the immune regulatory properties of MSC have been clearly demonstrated both in vitro and in vivo, theyare not inherently immunogenic. For instance, in the context of allogeneic hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation, the co-infusion of hematopoietic stem cells and MSC promotes a rapid hematologic reconstitution. Both in animal models and in clinical settings, this co-infusion may well explain the reduced incidence of graft versus host disease. On the other hand, a possible effect of MSC on organ transplant survival remains questionable, and justifies further investigations. Interestingly, clinical complications have not been reported after this type of cell therapy. The seventh seminar was divided into three parts: the first covered the classification and the function of MSC (homing, differentiation potential, immunomodulary properties); in the second part, speakers spoke about the engineering of MSC for cell therapy in the transplantation setting, and the third part focused on clinical approaches for measuring the impact of MSC on graft survival and donor-specific tolerance induction. International speakers led a stimulating discussion with the attendees (physicians and research workers). We sincerely hope that readers will appreciate this prospective reflexion." @default.
