- W2045961444 abstract "The major pathway of glucose metabolism in Babesia rodhaini is via anaerobic glycolysis to lactate. The organism is able to incorporate pyruvate into the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, probably through the formation of acetyl-CoA, and further metabolize the citrate formed to α-oxoglutarate. There are also pathways from fumarate to oxaloacetate, and oxaloacetate to pyruvate. Transamination occurs readily and leads to the formation of alanine, aspartate, and glutamate. Formation or utilization of succinate is minimal, and succinate dehydrogenase activity could not be detected with the assay methods employed. It is suggested that the TCA cycle in B. rodhaini is of minimal importance as a source of energy, but that the organism may be able to regulate the metabolism of its host erythrocyte through alteration of the NAD:NADH ratio via its own malate dehydrogenase." @default.
