- W2046172017 abstract "Abstract Experiments are described in which semisolid slurries are produced by mixing of two powders and heating to a temperature sufficient to melt one of them, which is solute-rich. After hot pressing and cooling, the resultant billet can be reheated into the semisolid regime for subsequent processing, such as extrusion or die-casting. Control over the fraction of liquid under these circumstances depends, not only on the thermal history, but also on local solute redistribution effects. It was observed with Al-Mg alloys that certain thermal histories tended to give rise to formation of liquid pockets within the interior of unmelted, monocrystalline solid globules. This phenomenon is examined in terms of the thermodynamic driving force, solute redistribution kinetics and accommodation of the liquation transformation strain. It is concluded that the nucleation of such pockets requires the presence of favourable heterogeneous sites, but that plastic relaxation of the transformation strain is sufficiently effective for growth to then continue at low solute supersaturations." @default.
