- W2046257082 abstract "Jim Haar and I arrived in Chapel Hill at exactly the same time as new faculty members, and for that reason Marian Green has afforded me the privilege of writing this small appreciation of his years here. I hope my colleagues will forgive me this: they too would want to say how much Jim's presence has meant to them and to this University. Now, it is a well-known fact that distinguished service professors at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are ornamental figures. I do not mean this as a comment on their outward appearance, though I hasten to add that Jim is not lacking in this respect. Nor do I mean to imply that they are mere decorations on the more substantial main body of the faculty. Rather these special scholars are, as the musical sense of ornament would suggest, those rare figures who add verve and panache to a well-constructed composition. And Jim fulfills this definition in many ways known to all musicologists, in the two books on Italian music he has published since his arrival here (one with his good friend Iain Fenlon), in the countless articles and reviews he has contributed to various journals, in his election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and in many other scholarly activities. He has approached his teaching with this same vigor, and his undergraduate seminars on Brahms's symphonies have occasioned the same enthusiasm as his graduate courses on mode in Renaissance music or the literary background of Romanticism. He could simply teach his classes, go home to his writing, and claim with some justification that he had served Carolina well. This ornamental notion of service would not suffice to describe Jim, however, for his strong sense of dedication and community makes him something very special indeed. His devotion to the profession of musicology is already familiar through his work as editor of" @default.
