- W2046281370 abstract "The concept of ‘ mean residence time’ (MRT) for atmospheric radioactive particulates is discussed on the basis of the reservoir theory described in the current literature. The various methods based on calculations and experiments used for determining MRT for the whole troposphere as well as for the planetary boundary layer (PBL) are reviewed. It is shown from comparison that the method based on measurement of the 210Bi/210Pb activity ratio is likely to give the most consistent values of MRT for the radioactive particulates of the PBL. The values of MRT based on 210Bi/210Pb activity ratios measured at Oak Ridge, TN, USA, and Bombay, India, are presented and discussed. A comparison of these recent results with earlier measurements reported in the literature show that MRT is consistent around a value of 7 days. It is also inferred from these data that surface canopy scavenging of radioactive particles could be a significant removal mechanism in the PBL, in addition to rainfall." @default.
