- W2046300015 abstract "The soluble proteins of the cornea of ox, pig and man were studied by paper electrophoresis and immunoelectrophoretic techniques. The proteins were extracted from the different layers of the cornea separately by high speed centrifugation. In all three species the results suggest that the corneal stroma may be devoid of both macro-globulins and β-lipoprotein, and the significance of these findings is discussed. The highest concentration of protein was found in the corneal epithelium. Results on human material suggest that keeping corneal tissue frozen produoes a considerable degree of denaturation of the proteins. The paper electropherograms were evaluated quantitatively after scanning with the Elplior instrument and planimetry of the curves. As the paper work does not distinguish between the serum and tissue proteins the identity of some of the globulin fractions is not certain. The results suggest that serum albumin as well as serum globulins may be totally absent from the epithelium of the cornea of the ox and pig. The immunoelectrophoretic work showed clearly that many of the fractions shown on the paper electropherograms were tissue proteins; a speoially prepared anti-macroglobulin serum was used for the detection of tissue macroglobulins derived from the serum." @default.
