- W2046597006 abstract "1. Red sea bream. Chrysophrys major, were transferred from full seawater (900 mOsm/kg) to different diluted media (660, 470, 340 and 170mOsm/kg) at 20°C. 2. From full seawater down to iso-osmotic strength (340 mOsm/kg), sea bream could maintain constancy of muscle water, plasma osmolality and ion concentrations. However, fish succumbed in media below iso-osmotic strength due to dilution of body fluids and loss of electrolytes. The limit of survival was about 250 mOsm/kg. 3. Routine oxygen consumption rate was unaffected by adaptation to different salinities. 4. Reduction in salinity resulted in significant increase in haematocrit, blood erythrocyte count and haemoglobin concentration. 5. Sea bream had higher muscle protein and glycogen and plasma lipid concentration in iso-osmotic salinity. It was suggested that these apparent changes were the result of reduced substrate utilization in an iso-osmotic medium." @default.
