- W2046719362 abstract "Abstract This article examines the responses of intellectuals to the theme of patriotism in England from the split of the Liberal Party over Ireland in 1886 to the end of the Second World War. Patriotism developed in British political debate in the context of the search for a Unionist political ideology and a progressive decline of wider attachments to empire. It argues that Britain lacked a cohesive nationalist intelligentsia on continental lines and so patriotic discourse developed substantially free from an attachment to formal racist doctrines. English patriotism cannot be simply equated with a ‘new racism’. This patriotic tradition was developed by George Orwell into a radical patriotism in the context of the Second World War, though this intellectual legacy was continued into a far more parochial direction of Little Englandism by literary writers such as Kingsley Amis and John Wain in the post war period.
