Abstract There exist significant difficulties with the efficient (>50 percent) production of hydrogen-ionizing or helium-fluorescing ultraviolet radiation by supernovae. Since the observed visible radiation is a small fraction (10- ) of the ultraviolet energy required for the previously proposed production of either the Gum Nebula or optical emission by helium fluorescence, the emission temperature must be high. The kinetic energy of supernova ejecta is the presumed source of the necessary heating. In the case of blackbody emission the constraints of high temperature and high efficiency result in an unrealistic requirement of the collision between ultrathin shells. In the limit of transparent emission, a significant fraction of the emitted photons are either too low in energy to ionize hydrogen or too high in energy either to ionize efficiently or to be absorbed.
