- W2046959619 abstract "Abstract Larval Taenia taeniaeformis rapidly incorporate radioactive inorganic orthophosphate (Pi32) into their soft tissues and calcareous corpuscles during exposure in vivo. After the host is injected with Pi32, maximum incorporation into the cysticerci is reached after 2 days and a decrease becomes evident only during the third week. During this time, a shift in distribution of the radioactivity between the soft tissues and the corpuscles occurs; the activity of the corpuscles increases from 7 to 21 per cent of the total. Soft tissues and corpuscles accumulate more Pi32 during in vitro incubation than in vivo. The lack of effect of metabolic inhibitors and the low Q10 of the phosphate accumulation indicate that an active transport mechanism is unlikely. Diminution of the total phosphate uptake or changes in the partition of Pi32 between soft tissues and corpuscles, or both occur when larvae are incubated under any of the following conditions: Lowering the temperature from 37° to 6°, a Na+-free medium, or a CO2-free environment. Isolated calcareous corpuscles rapidly incorporate phosphate. The process has a low Q10. The phosphorus is tightly bound and cannot readily be removed by washing. From these data it is concluded that the calcareous corpuscles constitute, as one of their functions, a phosphate reservoir for metabolic needs of the tapeworms." @default.
