- W2047203484 abstract "The angular momentum distributions among the OH * radicals in radiative collisions between electronic and water molecular beams in the vacuum of 1×10 -4 mmHg lead to several predictions as regards the mechanism of the radiative decomposition of H 2 O as follows. (1) The relative number of the abnormally rotating OH * radicals to the thermally rotating ones, both coming out of water molecules excited by electron-impacts, is on the average 10 to 1. (2) Two different kinds of singlet excited states of water molecules play leading parts in the radiative collisions; one is caused by the excitation of the oxygen (2 p ) electron up to the (3 s ) orbital, and the other by the simultaneous excitations of the oxygen (2 p ) and the hydrogen (1 s ) electrons up to their respective orbitals with higher principal quantum numbers. (3) The abnormally rotating OH * radicals result from the former and the thermally rotating ones from the latter. (4) The recoiling H atom flies off nearly in the direction of the H–H repulsion with the highest probability." @default.
