- W2047208976 abstract "Treatment with corticosterone stimulated food intake in growing cockerels, but the steroid treatment actually retarded growth. Experimental birds had less carcass protein and glycogen but more carcass lipid. Steroid-treated cockerels also had increased plasma levels of total lipid and cholesterol. However, corticosterone had no apparent effect on either the weight and lipid content of the liver, adrenal weight, or secretion of corticosterone. Furthermore, it did not produce a sustained effect on the rate of carbon dioxide exhalation or the metabolism of C14-palmitate to C14O2. Glucocorticoid treatment altered the in vivo disposition of glucose carbon, directing more into lipid and less into protein and carbohydrate. Although glucose was incorporated into both glyceride-glycerol and fatty acids, the biosynthesis of fatty acids was increased by corticosterone. The proportion of stearic acid increased and that of oleic acid decreased in the carcass total lipid of treated cockerels." @default.
