- W2047509719 abstract "elegantly done animal study, describe the autonomic response to sepsis and the effects of mild hypothermia. These authors undertook this experiment with the hypothesis that autonomic dysfunction has a major role in the cardiovascular derangements in patients with sepsis. In a rat model of Staphylococcus aureus sepsis, they concluded that hypothermia had a therapeutic role by reducing autonomic dysfunction. Moreover, the use of hypothermia significantly decreased mortality because no deaths were reported on those rats receiving this therapeutic modality [6]. The results of this study confirm the beneficial effects of TH in experimental sepsis [6]. One of the most interesting results was not only the change seen in biomarkers but also the significantly reduced mortality of those rats that underwent hypothermia. Despite the limitations of this small animal study, these results are promising and optimistic. We believe that the results of the study by Chang and coworkers warrant clinical trials in humans with sepsis. In the authors' personal experience, sepsis is never a contraindication to institute TH in critically ill patients. We applaud the efforts of Chang and coauthors in demystifying the use of a potentially lifesaving and organ-saving therapy in patients with infections." @default.
