- W2047569562 abstract "Summary The purpose of this project was to explore and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of the scanning electron microscope (SEM) for imaging media on paper substrates and to determine its usefulness for monitoring changes in the paper support and media during conservation treatments. Three samples of metal points (lead, tin, copper) were studied and analysed using four operational modes: secondary electron imaging, backscattered electron imaging, backscattered electrons in compositional mode, and backscattered electrons in topographic mode. The results showed that SEM can be usefully used for imaging drawing media on a paper support. The usefulness of the various SEM operational modes have been shown to depend on the medium analysed. The results also showed that good imaging depends upon the interaction between the electron beam and the media, and indeed upon the relationship between the media and the substrate. The main conclusion from this work is that whilst the use of the SEM has great potential in paper conservation research, it is necessary to be aware of the complex nature of the surfaces and media involved. To realize its full potential, all the appropriate modes of operation of the microscope must be used." @default.
