A historia da FCT, a sua criacao e sua atividade, confunde-se com o percurso da propria historia da ciencia e tecnologia e da organizacao da ciencia em Portugal. A par desse passado historico, a FCT e herdeira e detentora de um significativo patrimonio, com larga predominância de acervo documental, que inclui, para alem do seu proprio arquivo, o espolio da JNICT e de outros organismos publicos e privados. A FCT tem desenvolvido varias iniciativas no sentido de garantir a preservacao, organizacao e divulgacao do seu arquivo historico, valorizando o seu caracter verdadeiramente singular e unico no que respeita ao conhecimento da historia da organizacao e administracao da ciencia, das politicas cientificas e, afinal, da propria historia das ciencias em Portugal, perspetivando-se mesmo um espaco de cultura e memoria que pode integrar outros contributos, nomeadamente acervos pessoais, que encontrariam nessa integracao um lugar adequado que garantiria a sua salvaguarda e que de alguma forma completaria e alargaria esse patrimonio nacional que e o Arquivo da FCT. Entende-se que, para la da missao permanentemente renovada de promover ciencia, a inexorabilidade historica coloca a FCT, e as instituicoes que a precederam, decorridos pouco mais de quarenta anos da criacao da JNICT, como objeto de ciencia. Abstract The Fundacao para a Ciencia e a Tecnologia – IP (FCT) was created in 1997, replacing Junta Nacional de Investigacao Cientifica e Tecnologica (JNICT). It has as its mission the development, funding and evaluation of institutions, networks, infrastructures, scientific equipment, programs, projects and human resources in all domains of science and technology, as well as development of international scientific and technological cooperation (Decree-law No. 152/2007, article 3). The history of FCT, its creation and its activity, is indistinguishable from history of science, technology and of organization of science in Portugal. Along with that historical past, FCT is entrusted with a significant heritage, mainly of an archival nature, which includes, apart from its own archive, archives of JNICT and of other public and private institutions.  FCT has carried out several initiatives with aim of granting preservation, organization and promotion of its historical archive, stressing its truly remarkable and unique character with respect to knowledge of history of organization and administration of science, of science policy and, finally, of history of science in Portugal. The archive has been envisaged as a space of culture and memory, able to integrate other contributes, namely personal archives, thereby granting its preservation and completing and enlarging national heritage that FCT Archive is.  It is assumed that, along with permanently renewed mission of promoting science, forty years after creation of JNICT, historical inexorability makes FCT and institutions that preceded it a legitimate research object." @default.
