- W2047691849 abstract "lmost a year ago our editorial board suggested that JNP publish a special issue on infectious disease (ID), and we put it on our schedule. Between Athat time and the publication of this issue, we have been startled to see the steadily increasing number of both emerging IDs and the increased incidence of disease outbreaks from common infectious organisms. Preventable childhood diseases, such as pertussis and measles, continue to strike our children and, in some cases, kill them. Enterovirus D68 has transformed from a relatively benign virus causing gastrointestinal problems to an organism that colonizes the lungs of children and sickens them, with the incidence spreading from state to state. Meningitis continues to plague college campuses. Diseases once confined to distant underdeveloped countries are now in the US, and with the ability to travel quickly, we watch with concern to see if patients with these diseases will walk into our own clinics. As clinicians, it is reasonable that we should all feel a personal challenge in recognizing and treating IDs that we have not seen before. This change in disease patterns will also influence the choice of content that NPs must learn and master in their educational and continuing education programs. Every NP—no matter our specialty practice—should be involved in this fight against ID. We must take diagnostic and treatment encounters seriously and yet evaluate every patient for how we can reduce unnecessary antibiotic exposure. On a broad level, we must prioritize professional actions to meet new ID challenges by controlling endemic and emerging infections; reducing the incidence of high-burden diseases, such as chronic hepatitis and HIV, health-care-associated infections, and foodborne diseases; and limiting outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases. NPs must also participate in finding new, multidisciplinary approaches to address antimicrobial resistance that has contributed to the growing global health crisis. As we go to press, I am hearing many nurses express concern and fear. These feelings are shared through interviews on television and radio and through fearencouraging and perhaps even irresponsible reporting. But concern is also whispered quietly in the hallways of clinics and hospitals. Knowledge must drive out unreasonable fear. We must make sure that our own knowledge and technique will protect us as health care providers so we remain as part of the health care team and not become new patients. These actions all begin with NPs mastering the latest information about these IDs. JNP seeks to offer the latest scientific knowledge about these challenges by featuring this special issue on ID. We recognize that it will be nurse practitioners on the front line in many hospitals and clinics who first face patients with ID. NPs should prepare now to step forward and assume this responsibility. Armed with the latest information, NPs can use their other skills to increase the likelihood of accurately diagnosing patients with ID who must be found and appropriately treated." @default.
