In this pH region the homogenates hydrolyzed cholesterol ester presented either as mixed emulsions with lecithin or as serum lipoproteins much more efficiently than at neutral or slightly alkaline pH. At the same pH lysosomes catalyzed both the hydrolysis of cholesterol oleate and its formation from cholesterol and oleic acid with several-fold higher rates than any other subcellular fraction. The relative rates of hydrolysis versus ester formation could be significantly changed by varying the proportions of lecithin, cholesterol, cholesterol oleate and oleic acid of the emulsions that were used as substrates in these experiments. Increasing the proportion of cholesterol in the mixed emulsion favoured esterification and decreased the rate of cholesterol-ester hydrolysis. In contrast high rates of esterification as well as hydrolysis were observed when the cholesterol ester content of the substrate emulsion was increased within certain limits. Increasing the lecithin content of the emulsion favoured hydrolysis and decreased the rate of esterification." @default.
