- W2047811190 abstract "Reticular formation multiple unit activity (RUA), EEG, EMG, and gross behavior were recorded from cats chronically implanted with cortical and subcortical electrodes. Following the administration of various antidepressant agents three phases of drug-induced action were described, as follows: Phase I — a short period of excitement accompanied by increased EMG, a desynchronized EEG, and increased RUA. Phase II — characterized by a prolonged lowering of the RUA to the slow wave sleep level, EEG slow wave activity and behavioral quiescence without the behavioral concomitants of sleep, lasting for 1–3 days. Phase III — characterized by EEG and gross behavior comparable to control wakefulness, RPS and slow wave sleep; however, the RUA levels for each state were elevated above control levels. Amitriptyline, desmethylimipramine, imipramine, chlorpromazine and perphenazine all induced Phases I and II. Imipramine was the only compound studied to elicit Phase III. Convulsions were observed following high doses of amitriptyline, desmethylimipramine and imipramine. Methamphetamine and pargyline induced changes characteristic of Phase I. Methamphetamine induced a prolonged period of alertness with an increased RUA level and desynchronized EEG. Pargyline elicited a period of alertness followed by a prolonged period of vacillating wakefulness and drowsy behavior. L'activité unitaire multiple de la formation réticulaire, l'EEG, l'EMG et le comportement global sont enregistrés chez des chats ayant des électrodes corticales et souscorticales implantées chroniquement. Après administration de divers agents antidépresseurs, 3 phases d'action induite par les drogues sont décrites: Phase I: courte période d'excitation accompagnée d'une augmentation de l'EMG, d'un EEG désynchronisé et d'une augmentation de l'activité unitaire multiple réticulaire. Phase II: abaissement prolongé de l'activité unitaire multiple réticulaire jusqu'à un niveau qui correspond au sommeil lent, ondes lentes EEG et tranquillité comportementale sans les concomitants comportementaux du sommeil, durant 1–3 jours. Phase III: EEG et comportement global comparables à ceux de l'état de veille de contrôle, PMO, et sommeil avec ondes lentes; cependant, le niveau d'activité unitaire multiple réticulaire pour chaque état est supérieur aux niveaux de contrôle. L'amitriptyline, la desméthylimipramine, l'imipramine, la chlorpromazine, et la perphénazine, induisent toutes les phases I et II. L'imipramine est la seule drogue étudiée qui permette de faire apparaître la phase III. Des convulsions ont été observées après doses élevées d'amitriptyline, de desméthylimipramine et d'imipramine. La méthamphétamine et la pargyline induisent les modifications caractéristiques de la phase I. La méthamphétamine entraîne une période prolongée d'alerte avec augmentation du niveau d'activité unitaire multiple réticulaire et EEG désynchronisé.
