- W2047958011 abstract "We thank Brown et al. for commenting on our work. In the article they mention,1 they used an infrared-capable digital video camera to capture still images of the pupil, reviewed the images on a computer, and selected the clearest photograph for analysis. In contrast, we used an infrared-capable digital still camera to capture pupil images under the scotopic condition. Compared with the capture function of a digital video camera, a digital still camera can acquire sharper still images and obtain serial images at constant intervals (burst-shot function). We used the continuous-shot function of the camera so we could take 7 well-focused serial images in 2.8 seconds at a constant interval of 400 milliseconds. We did not select images randomly according to image quality,1,2 but chose the image containing the largest pupil diameter from among the 7 serial images to overcome pupillary unrest. The 400-millisecond interval of the serial photographs may not be sufficient to find the largest diameter of the pupil under the scotopic condition, and higher-speed devices might be more accurate. Multiple-measurement digital infrared pupillometers that can acquire serial images at speeds up to 25 frames per second are available.3 Nevertheless, the largest recorded pupil diameter might represent the scotopic pupil size better than an average or even a randomly selected reading.4 In the article by Bradley et al.2 comparing the infrared photographic method with the Colvard pupillometer, the accuracy of the pupil diameter measurement using the Colvard pupillometer was investigated using digital photography as a standard. The authors used Bland-Altman analysis to compare the Colvard pupillometer and infrared digital photography, but the repeatability of each device was not investigated. The purpose of our study was to compare the accuracy of burst-shot infrared digital photography with the Colvard pupillometer in terms of repeatability, so we cannot compare our data with the work by Bradley et al.2 However, when using the Colvard pupillometer, the possible sources of errors they noted should be considered. Again, we thank Brown et al. for drawing attention to articles related to our work and elucidating the differences between our study and those of others." @default.
