- W2048355514 abstract "Incoherent scatter radar data gathered only through 1972 have been included in the development of current global thermospheric models. Extended and new data sets relating to a wide range of thermospheric quantities are currently available. The information contained in these newer results is summarized. A strong seasonal dependence of the magnetic-activity effect in exospheric temperature behavior has been identified and helps explain differences in the mean seasonal variations observed at different latitudes. Over-the-pole winds are believed to be the cause of nighttime temperature increases observed at high latitudes. Observations of the shape of the thermospheric temperature profile indicate that the gradient at the base of the thermosphere remains largely unchanged throughout the solar cycle. Much lower thermosphere data now exist, but the problem of the global description of the tidal structure remains. N2, O and O2 densities have been inferred from the radar data. The lower thermosphere N2 densities may form the best set of such data available for modeling purposes. Differences between the radar and satellite O and O2 densities remain to be resolved." @default.
