- W2048403527 abstract "Considerable research has demonstrated significant increases in plasmaβ-endorphin (β-EP) levels as a result of physical activity. The majority of these studies have demonstrated findings on the basis of differences in resting (basal) β-EP and β-EP levels observed immediately post-exercise. It has been suggested, however, that peak β-EP levels among untrained individuals may not be reached until recovery from maximal exercise. To examine this phenomenon among trained individuals, nine competitive male distance runners completed a maximal treadmill protocol. Blood was sampled and assayed for β-EP via radioimmunoassay with values([horizontal bar over]X + SE) for β-EP as follows:Table A repeated measures MANOVA indicated that immediate post-exercise β-EP was significantly greater than values associated with either exercise or recovery periods (p<.01). In addition, samples at 15 min post-exercise were significantly lower than values reported for all other sample periods, including basal. The present findings support an increase in β-EP as a result of maximal exercise but fail to support previously reported findings of peak β-EP values occurring during exercise recovery. Though the implications of these findings are unclear, it may be hypothesized that the well-conditioned state of the runners in the current sample may have contributed to an increased rate of plasma clearance of β-EP during recovery." @default.
