- W204864849 abstract "Restrained cooling tests were performed on dense asphalt concrete samples that were prepared with two different bitumen's modified with various amounts of SBS polymer. No great differences in thermal stress response were found between unmodified or modified samples when a standard cooling rate of 10 degrees Celsius per hour was used. Neither the base bitumen's crude source and stiffness (penetration grade) nor the polymer content appeared to influence the polymer's effect. However, the acoustic activity emanating from the samples was found to be a factor of then lower for modified when compared to unmodified systems. A number of important observations were made when notched samples were tested in the restrained cooling test. First, the presence of a notch appears to bring the point at which the maximum stress was reached closer to the onset of acoustic emission suggesting that most of the crack initiation phase is by bypassed in notched specimens. Second, the presence of a notch appears to distinguish the modified from the unmodified samples in that the loss of strength due to the notch was more pronounced. The bending beam stiffness (S), the slope of the creep curve (m), and the tensile failure strain of various modified binders were correlated with the results of the restrained cooling tests. The temperature at which the failure strain reached 1.3 percent correlated best with the temperature at which the maximum load was obtained in the restrained cooling tests on a notched sample. Other SHRP parameters (or combinations thereof) were found to be less satisfactory for predicting the temperature at which the maximum stress is reached in the notched restrained cooling test. None of the SHRP parameters showed a satisfactory correlation with the restrained cooling test results." @default.
