- W2048673021 abstract "In many strong earthquakes that have struck the United States in the last century the damage to the nonstructural building components has exceeded the cost of structural damage in most affected buildings. For most modern buildings explicitly designed for seismic loads, the damage has been largely limited to nonstructural components. Failures in most nonstructural components pose hazards to occupants. Furthermore, the damage to nonstructural components in several cases has resulted in loss of functionality of the building. For essential facilities, such as hospitals, loss of functionality even for a short period of time may be critical. Even if the structural components of the building can achieve immediate-occupancy-performance during a seismic event, equipment failure can lower the performance level of the entire building system. This paper will discuss lessons learned from the performance of nonstructural components and systems from previous earthquakes and the evolution of the design philosophy and design provisions in recent building codes for such components and systems. The paper will also discuss the recent research and code development efforts in the last decade aimed in improving the performance of nonstructural components and harmonize it to the appropriate structural performance levels based on occupancy category. The paper will also discuss why it is necessary to break away from the traditional black box concept. Since the 2000 IBC, nonstructural components that are determined to have a safety-critical function have had to satisfy special requirements. Safety-critical components are required to be specified as designated seismic systems and, certified by the manufacturer to function following design earthquake level motions. This certification is required to be based on sophisticated dynamic analysis, empirical methods or shake table testing. The paper will discuss the application and relative merits of these procedures as they relate to building codes. The direct application of these procedures to Performance Based Seismic Engineering will also be discussed." @default.
