• W2048688972 abstract "We conducted the baseline study of the Nationwide Dementia Epidemiological Study of Korea (NDESK) which is the first nationwide population-based longitudinal cohort study on dementia in Korea. In order to capture national variation, 15 districts across the country were selected and 8,199 elderly subjects were sampled. In phase I population survey, the Korean version of Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE-KC) was applied to all survey participants. In phase II, the diagnostic evaluation was conducted. Participants in phase I were randomly sampled from each group with different sampling fractions. Group-specific sampling fractions used were 10% for the good, 50% for the intermediate, and 100% for the poor performance group. In II phase, a face-to-face standardized diagnostic interview, physical and neurological examinations were administered to each subject using the Korean version of CERAD Clinical Assessment Battery. CERAD-K Neuropsychological Assessment Battery was administered by neuropsychologists or trained research nurses. Overall, a total of 8,199 individuals were supposed to be drawn, and 6,141 subjects participated in the first phase (response rate = 74.9%). Among them, 2,336 subjects were supposed to participate in the second phase, and finally 1,673 individuals completed the survey. Of the 1,673 participants who completed the second phase survey, 252 were diagnosed as Alzheimer's disease (AD), 81 as vascular dementia (VD), 2 as dementia with lewy body (DLB), 3 as Parkinson's disease dementia (PDD), 2 as (frontotemporal dementia) FTD, 2 as alcohol related dementia (ARD), and 9 as other dementia. The age-, gender-, education-, and urbanicity-standardized prevalence of dementia among Korean elderly aged 65 years or older was estimated to be 8.1% (95% CI = 6.9-9.2) for overall dementia, 5.69% (95% CI = 4.82-6.56) for AD and 1.97% (95% CI = 1.31-2.63) for VD. With rapid increase of elderly population, dementia will increase at an alarming rate in Korea. It is projected that 0.47 million people in 2010, 1.14 million in 2030, and 2.13 million in 2050 will be suffering from dementia.
