Seleccionaram-se 188 indivíduos da cidade de Valência, Espanha, distribuídos por três grupos de idade: 63 adolescentes (idade média: 14,15 anos), 62 jovens (idade média: 21,9 anos) e 63 adultos (idade média: 40 anos). O diâmetro mesiodistal de cada dente e o perímetro de arcada foram medidos em cada um dos modelos de estudo obtidos de cada indivíduo da amostra usando um método digital e foi calculada a DOD (positiva e negativa) para cada arcada. Compararam-se os resultados obtidos entre sexos e grupos de idade. Os resultados variaram em cada arcada entre sexos e grupos de idade dependendo se se tratava de discrepância positiva ou negativa. Encontraram-se diferenças significativas entre sexos apenas para a DOD positiva superior em adolescentes e jovens. Com a idade, a DOD positiva superior aumenta significativamente no sexo feminino, enquanto que a DOD negativa diminui significativamente na arcada superior entre jovens e adultos do sexo masculino e aumenta significativamente na arcada inferior entre adolescentes e jovens, observando-se uma tendência geral ao seu aumento nos outros grupos. To describe and to evaluate changes in tooth size-arch length discrepancy (TSALD) with age in both genders. 188 individuals from the city of Valencia, Spain, were selected and distributed in three age groups: 63 adolescents (mean age: 14.15 years), 62 young adults (mean age: 21.9 years) and 63 adults (mean age: 40 years). Mesiodistal tooth diameter and arch perimeter were measured in each study cast of each individual of the sample using a digital method and TSALD (positive and negative) was calculated for each dental arch. The results obtained were compared between gender and age groups. The results varied between age groups and genders in each dental arch depending if tooth TSALD was positive or negative. Significant differences between genders were only found in upper TSALD for adolescents and young adults. With age, upper positive TSALD increases significantly in females, whereas negative TSALD decreases significantly in the upper arch between young adult and adult males and increases significantly in the lower arch between adolescents and young adults, being observed a general tendency of its increase in the other groups." @default.
