C. ; North, A. R. ; de Jager, O. C. ; Nel, H. I. Abstract Observations of Vela X-1 which confirm the 1986 measurements of North et al. (1987) are presented. The results establish Vela X-1 beyond any doubt as a source which persistently emits pulsed very high energy gamma-rays. The pulse period determination of 283.14 s in the X-ray region reported by Tsunemi (1987) is also confirmed. Five different but coherent enhancements were observed during 1987 which were clustered around X-ray eclipse and show a different light curve from the persistent emission. It is suggested that this may be indicative of very high energy gamma-ray production not only on or near the neutron star, but also on the limb of the companion.
