- W2048834051 abstract "The lactogenic activity of chinchilla pituitary prolactin was demonstrated by morphological stimulation of milk secretion in mouse mammary tissue cocultured with chinchilla pituitary explants. Eight pituitaries maintained in cultured for 8 days secreted 6 mg of protein which was recovered from culture medium by salt precipitation. The steady-state secretion rate obtained after 5 days in culture was 60 μg/pituitary/day. The major lactogenic components of the pituitary secretion products were purified by gel electrophoresis. Lactogenic activity was associated with three electrophoretic variants. These proteins were further characterized by molecular exclusion chromatography using Sephadex G-25 and G-100 in which they migrated as proteins of the same Stokes radius. Molecular weights of these proteins were 22,500 ± 1000 as determined by electrophoresis in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate. Chinchilla prolactin appears to be similar to other mammalian prolactins with regard to lactogenic properties, molecular weight, and susceptibility to deamidation." @default.
