- W2049205411 abstract "To the Editor.— Jacobs and colleagues 1 recently presented a BRIEF REPORT of a child from whom Haemophilus influenzae type b was isolated from the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) 72 hours into therapy with ceftriaxone (50 mg/kg intravenously every 12 hours) for pneumonia and bacteremia. As the authors mention, delayed sterilization of the CSF does occur and has been reported with ampicillin and chloramphenicol as well as the cephalosporins. Certainly, the goal of antimicrobial therapy in bacterial meningitis is to sterilize the CSF as quickly as possible. The authors' concluding statement, however, which emphasizes caution with the use of a single daily dose of ceftriaxone, is not warranted. Although the company's package insert recommends that meningitis be treated with a total daily dose of up to 100 mg/kg (up to 4 g), divided every 12 hours with or without an initial loading dose of 75 mg/kg, Congeni et al 2 and" @default.
