• W2049366934 abstract "SummaryRoyal jelly (RJ) is secreted by worker bees of Apis mellifera to feed the queen larvae. Believed to be the longevity factor of queen honey bees and due to its variety of health promoting ingredients, RJ is used worldwide as dietary supplement, health product and in cosmetics. To reach best possible effects, application of high quality RJ is absolutely required. Here we show, based on physicochemical properties and antioxidant activity, a comparison between fresh, local RJ samples obtained directly from beekeepers and commercial ones. Analyses revealed a higher content of 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid, a quality parameter of RJ, for local compared to commercial RJ. Furthermore, determined ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) correlated with radical scavenging activity (DPPH) and total polyphenols was significantly higher in local RJ samples. Therefore, our results indicate a higher quality for local RJ compared to commercial.ResumenLa jalea real (JR) es secretada por las abejas obreras de Apis mellifera para alimentar a las larvas de la reina. Se cree que es el factor de la longevidad de las abejas reinas y debido a su variedad de ingredientes promotores de la salud, la JR se utiliza en todo el mundo como suplemento dietético, producto saludable y en cosmética. Para alcanzar los mejores efectos posibles, es absolutamente necesaria la aplicación de JR de alta calidad. Aquí se muestra, en base a las propiedades físico-químicas y la actividad antioxidante, una comparación entre muestras frescos de JR locales obtenidas directamente de los apicultores y los comerciales. Los análisis revelaron un contenido más alto de ácido 10-hidroxi-2-decenoico, un parámetro de calidad de JR, en la JR local frente a la comercial. Además, la potencia antioxidante reductora férrica determinada (PARF) correlacionada con la actividad de depuración de radicales (ADR) y los polifenoles totales, fue significativamente mayor en las muestras de JR locales.
