- W2049446302 abstract "The incidence of malignant skin tumors has increased steadily over the past three decades. Today, non-melanoma skin cancer is the most frequent cancer in humans, whereas melanoma of the skin has emerged from being an extreme rarity to a malignant disorder, frequently with a fatal course, affecting one person in a hundred. Due to these developments, a search for new therapeutic options has begun. In fact, both surgical and nonsurgical treatment options have been developed recently, and perspectives with exciting options for treating skin cancer have become visible. In this review, new developments in sentinel lymph node biopsy are discussed. This technique allows a better prognostic evaluation of melanoma patients than using tumor thickness as the only prognostic parameter. Furthermore, the involvement and specific activation of a patient's immune system has made unforeseen progress in the treatment of skin cancer. Many different strategies have been used. In this review, only some of them are discussed: hybrid cell vaccination, peptide vaccination, topical immune stimulation with imidazoquinolones or CpG oligonucleotides. Most of these new options have been tested in Phase II studies, and their routine clinical use has now become visible on the horizon. ( J Dermatol Treat (2000) 11 (Suppl 1):S3-S8)" @default.
