- W2049630591 abstract "Yeats' Statement that he regards A Vision as a collection of 'stylistic arrangements of experience'1 might imply that its status is that of a kind of poem. Yeats does, however, problematize this straightforwrd literary approach. In his letter to Ezra Pound introducing A Vision (the second version) Yeats refers to his work as 'a book which ... will proclaim a new divinity' (p. 27). It is with this statement in mind that I propose to view the book largely in isolation from the main body of his work. He is suggesting that it can have a value in its own right beyond that of the elucidation of his poetry or plays. His treatment of his material seems to be subject to various difficulties. This in turn renders any attempt to establish a critical position from which to approach the text uncertain. This is due, among other things, to its status as a 'sacred book' (in which case criticism might be considered superfluous). A major part of its content is open to the negative evaluation of being 'dank crankeries'. It seems that the book is perhaps now considered 'literat ure' mainly by virtue of its relationship to Yeat's poetic work, and as largely a failure in any other sense. As M. Seiden assumes, 'above all, because he was a poet rather than a philosopher or historian or reformer or prophet, Yeats made use of A Vision—its symbols and themes—in his poetry'.2 Yeats himself, however, seems to have regarded A Vision as complete in itself, as his 'book of books'.3 Even Harold Bloom decides that it is nearer to a 'Gnostic scripture or apocalypse' than a study of poetic consciousness.4 It seems evident, for the most part, that Yeats accorded great importance to this work, even if his justification for doing so is obscure. Seiden tells us that 'he regarded A Vision, if mistakenly, as a book of deep religious significance' and that he seems to have hoped 'his mythology, which he ardently described as a universal faith, might in time take the place of political theories, religious beliefs, and metaphysical systems which, he argued, no longer functioned'.5 As yet this has not happened. This, we may assume, must be because the book not only presents critical problems, but is intrinsically problematic— not sufficient to itself. It is with the implications of these difficulties that I" @default.
