- W204963546 abstract "Newly developed water-absorbing polymers have been suggested to aid plant survival and growth when added to soils in arid regions. A polyacrylamide and a polyvinylalcohol were tested in the Sudan on trees of economic importance. The polyvinylalcohol almost doubled the field capacity of sandy soil when added at 0·5% and retained 22% of this water after 23 days, whereas the control soil retained only 5%. There were no clear effects of the polymers on the germination of three species of tree seedlings but they aided survival and growth. Seedling establishment after 50 days was increased by up to 40%. Under severe water stress, only seeds in soils with polymer additives germinated. Both polymers significantly increased the period of tree survival in two experiments in the nursery. The greatest effect was a five-fold increase in survival in the most severe water stress treatment, achieved by using the polyvinylalcohol at 0·5% v/v. However, it is unlikely that applications of the higher concentrations of the polymers will be justified economically. Water-absorbing polymers potentially have an important role to play in tree planting practices in arid regions." @default.
