- W2049753532 abstract "The fatty acid (FA) composition of colostrum of 24 lactating women giving birth to healthy term (n=8)(group A), preterm (n=8) (group B) and term, but small for gestational age, infants (n=8) (group C) were determined in a sectional descriptive study. Colostrum was manually collected, within 5 days post-partum, before and after the morning feeding. Food frequency questionnaires (FFQ) were used to assess dietary lipid intake during pregnancy. Total lipid of colostrum samples were determined by crematocrit and FA by gas chromatography. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Total lipids were similar in colostrum of groups A (2,8±l,7g/dl) and B (2,6±1,6g/dl) but significantly higher (p<0.05) in group C (5,1±1,9g/dl). Nineteen FA were identified in the samples. There was no significant difference in the concentration of FA in the colostrum of these women. The most abundant FA was the oleic acid, accounting for more than 30% of total FA, followed by palmitic and linoleic acids. Araquidonic acid was found in all samples whereas docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) was found only in 4 samples of group A, 3 of B and 1 of C. Recent findings indicate that newborns are able to synthesize DHA de novo, but it is not yet clear if the amount produced is sufficient, specially in premature infants who has smaller reserves of this conditionally essential nutrient. On the other hand, FFQ revealed limited consumption of food sources of DHA. Important sources of DHA are cold salt-water fish which are not locally available and, therefore, expensive. Considering the advantages of long chain ω3 FA in growth and visual function, dietitians should advise on the intake of these foods by pregnant and lactating women." @default.
